What is Melanotan and how does it work?
Melanotan is a synthetic peptide that stimulates the production of melanin in the body, leading to darker skin pigmentation. There are two forms: Melanotan I, which primarily promotes tanning, and Melanotan II, which can also influence sexual arousal. It works by mimicking the action of the natural hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). When injected, Melanotan binds to melanocortin receptors, activating melanin production in the skin, which results in tanning without sun exposure. While it has gained popularity in the cosmetic industry, its use is not approved by the FDA due to safety concerns, including potential side effects such as nausea, flushing, and increased blood pressure. Caution is advised before using Melanotan.
