What are fireworks, how do they work, and what are some safety tips for using them?

Fireworks are devices designed to create visual and auditory effects through the combustion of chemical compounds. These compounds typically include gunpowder and metal salts, which produce various colors and sounds when ignited. Fireworks are used for celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, Independence Day, and festivals, as well as for professional displays.

How Fireworks Work: When ignited, the gunpowder inside the firework burns and causes an explosion. A fuse triggers the ignition of different chemical compounds, which create the signature colors and sounds. For example, strontium creates red, copper makes blue, and barium produces green.

Safety Tips for Using Fireworks:

  1. Only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers.

  2. Always read the instructions before use.

  3. Set off fireworks in an open, flat area away from buildings, trees, and flammable materials.

  4. Keep a safe distance and supervise children at all times.

  5. Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling fireworks.

  6. Never relight a "dud" firework—wait 20 minutes and soak it in water before disposing of it.
